508,614. Railway locomotives and trains ; ventilating. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G. April 19, 1938, No. 11741. Convention date, April 19, 1937. [Classes 79 (i) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group X] A locomotive or motor unit A is coupled to a car unit B, and its side walls 15 at the rear embrace and are spaced from the side walls of the front end of the car unit, so that the flow of air due to the forward travel of the motor unit produces an aspirating effect tending to draw air out of the interior of the motor unit through the spaces between the said walls. In the construction shown applied to a motor unit having a Diesel engine 1 coupled to an electric generator, air is drawn from the front of the unit through louvres 4, openings in a forward bulkhead 3 and openings 10 in the rear of the unit, this air passing through engine-cooling radiators 6. Fans 5, 7 driven by auxiliary motors 2, 8 may be provided to assist the air flow. The rear ends of the side walls of the motor unit may be provided with flexible portions 15a, Fig. 4, to permit of use on railway curves of short radius. The front end of the car unit B is rounded or streamlined to fit into the rear end of the motor unit as shown. A train may be made up with a car unit B at each end, so that the motor unit may be coupled up at either end.
