[Class 72] [Also in Group XXII] In producing sheets for transformer core by hot rolling, pickling and polishing, cold rolling and annealing, the formation of scale during annealing is prevented by giving them a protective alkaline coating preceding the cold rolling. The coating may be a solution of tri-sodium phosphate or other agents precipitated from an aqueous solution, e.g. sodium aluminate, preferably applied by spraying, to supersede the known applied coatings of nickel, chromium, tin, zinc, aluminium applied by e.g. electrolytically, or other known coating of waterglass or a mixture of waterglass and powdered tin or a halogen salt of an alkali mixed with a base such as calcium fluoride or calcium chloride.
