Abstract
506,310. Latches; permutation locks. DEWE. July 9, 1938, No. 20347. Convention date, May 13, 1938. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Feb. 3, 1939] [Class 44] In a permutation-controlled latch having a locking member co-operating with permutation discs and with the bolt, the locking member 14, Fig. 1, has a nose 46 capable of being moved clear of the path of the bolt 42, after movement of the locking member with the combination formed, to permit free operation as a latch in spite of a subsequent disengagement of the locking member from the permutation discs 56 and scattering of the combination. The nose is slotted at 45<1> and mounted on the locking member by a flattened spindle 44 carrying a hand lever 44<1>. After forming the combination the lever 44<1> is pushed to slide a part 13 of the locking member into the notches 13<1> of the discs 56. This movement withdraws the nose from the bolt 42 and continued pressure on the lever turns the spindle 44 and with it the nose 46. If the locking member is allowed to return to its former position with the nose 46 kept inclined, and the combination scattered, the parts take up the position shown in Fig. 3. The bolt 42 can then be operated freely by a knob 51. To block the bolt, the nose is turned by the lever 44<1> until it snaps behind the shoulder of the bolt, the slotted mounting of the nose on the spindle 44 enabling this to be effected without the necessity of forming the combination. The permutation discs 56 have individual setting knobs 56<1>, Fig. 4, and are nested one within another, the part 13 of the locking member 14 being stepped to enter all the notches 13<1> simultaneously.
