Abstract
505,824. Furnaces for heating metal rolls. DUNKAK, E. B. Nov. 10, 1938, No. 32750. [Class 51 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A roll heater comprises a jacket containing a series of heating tubes 7 extending along the roll, the tubes being supplied with a combustible mixture of fluid fuel through burners 11. The jacket is in separate halves secured round both rolls by top and bottom throw-over bolts 23, and, to cover longer rolls, may have end extensions 29. The jacket comprises a sandwich of insulating material 5, Fig. 2, between sheet iron 2, 4 stiffened by T irons 1 and carrying the tubes 7 therein. The extensions comprise a like sandwich of insulating material 29 in a casing 28, without pipes. The jacket may be flexed to fit more closely into the nip of the rolls by thrust screws 16. The gases exhaust either through a space left between the burner 11 and the tube 7 or through the other end of the pipe as shown. Various forms of straight or looped pipes are shown, e.g. as in Fig. 9. A mixer or carburetter supplies the fuel through a manifold, and the fuel may be supplied at alternate ends of the rows of pipes.
