Abstract

504,717. Cigarette-making machines. HORGAN, G. D., and INDUSTRIAL MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Oct. 25, 1937, No. 29062. [Class 130] In a rotary-knife cutting mechanism suitable for continuous-rod and like machines, in which the knife during the cutting operation moves axially with the cigarette rod, the knife shaft 5 is provided with an inclined cam plate 7 operating between relatively fixed abutment means adapted to oscillate about an axis which lies within the area of the cam plate, and preferably also about an intersecting axis at right-angles to the other. As shown, the shaft 5 is recessed at its end to receive the end of a driving shaft 13 carrying one or more pins 14 engaging in aper- 'tures in a flange 15 of the shaft 5. Each side of the cam plate 7 engages a pair of rolls 16 formed as ball races rotatable on spindle 17 on a mounting 18 supported to pivot about an axis parallel to that of the spindles. The support for the mounting 18 is a yoke 19 the arms 20 of which are pivoted on a framework 21 so that the yoke may oscillate about an axis at rightangles to the axes of the spindles and coinciding with the medial plane of the cam plate. The framework 21 is adjustable about a pivot 21a by means of a screw and nut device 22, 23 for adjusting the amplitude of reciprocation of the knife shaft. The ledger plate 29 is reciprocated by means of a forked member 31 engaging a collar 30 on the flange 15 of the knife shaft. Specification 476,618 is referred to.
