Abstract

774,173. Sharpening cutting edges. WOOL INDUSTRIES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. April 12, 1954 [April 18, 1953], No. 10660/53. Class 60 A machine for sharpening cutting blades such as those of microtome knives, comprises a lapping plate 4 and a holder 14 arranged to hold the blade 2 against the plate at the desired angle for sharpening, the holder being connected to mechanism arranged to give the blade a lapping motion. This mechainsm consists of a capacitor motor 6 driving through a reduction gearbox 1 two cranks plates 8 coupled by a bar 10 to which is hingedly connected a support 11 having a sleeve 12 to form a swivel mounting for a pin 13 attached to the holder 14. The plate 4 is of plate glass and rests on rubber pads 15 carried in cups 16 fitted to the ends of four pillars 17 supported on ball joints by two pairs of first-order levers 20 with a 2:1 ratio. To adjust the angle between the blade 2 and the plate 4, the pillars 17 are adjusted vertically by a control knob 28 which acts on the levers 20 through a shaft 27, eccentrics 30 and discs 24, the latter being fixed to stems 25 free to slide in sleeves 26. A spring-loaded pin (not shown) co-operates with a serrated wheel 31 on the shaft 27 to hold the mechanism in its adjusted position. A reversing switch may be provided for the motor 6 to enable the movement of the blade to be reversed so as to re-distribute the abrasive material on the plate 4.
