Abstract

504,563. Ball joints. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., HALFORD, F. B., and BARLOW, B. W. Oct. 26, 1937, No. 29181. [Class 65 (ii)] A ball-and-socket joint comprises a one piece socket A<1> and an annular ball member made in two separable part-annular portions C, C<1> so formed that first one portion, then the other can be inserted into the socket, the whole being maintained assembled by a pin B<1>. The part-annular portions may have interlocking shoulders to prevent relative movement between them and may have means such as a circlip C<6>, Fig. 12, to hold the parts together when the pin B<1> is removed. A bushing may be provided in the bore of the ball member for the reception of the pin B<1>. In a modification the part C comprises more than half the circumference of the ball member and in a further modification, Fig. 10, the ball member is formed of three parts G, G<1>, G<2>. The invention is not limited by the number of part annular parts of which the ball member is formed. The joint may be lubricated through passages A<4>, C<3>. The joint may be used to connect the sleeve valve B of an internal-combustion engine to an operating camshaft A.
