Abstract

503,505. Guard rails for roads. LOVELL, S. M. Oct. 6, 1937, No. 27126. [Class 45] [Also in Groups X and XVIII] A kerb block, surface-marking block, guard rail, or like unit for use in roads is provided with a number of light-reflecting facets which increase progressively in size from one end to the other. The kerb block 1 shown has its facets 3 ... 6 arranged in a longitudinal recess 2, the upper and lower faces 7 and 8 of which are inclined to the horizontal. The facets are outwardly and upwardly inclined to ensure maximum illumination from oncoming traffic. The smallest facet 3 is arranged nearest to the source of illumination, and further inclined surfaces 9 ... 12 are formed in the recess to prevent the shadow of one facet being cast on another. In a modification the facets extend from the top to the lower edge of the kerb and in another modification the facets are arranged on the bevel face of a kerb. For surface-marking purposes faceted blocks of rubber or aluminium are employed and are arranged to project slightly above or to be flush with the surface of the road:
