[Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] An auxiliary change-speed gear g combined with the rear axle gearing h is driven from a forwardly-disposed engine and main changespeed gear (not shown), the auxiliary gear comprising a main shaft p, coaxial with the propeller shaft f and adapted to be coupled directly to the rear axle gear shaft q, and constant mesh gear pairs t, u-w, x giving an indirect drive, these gear pairs being in constant driving connection with the rear axle gearing and being preferably skew, gears. In the construction shown the combined gear casing g and h is mounted at three points on transverse frame members k by means of bolts m, rubber blocks l and lugs i. The gear-ratio is changed by means of a clutch y splined on the shaft p and slidableto engage either with the gear x fixed on the axle gear-shaft q or with'the gear t loose on the shaft, p. The clutch is formed with bevelled claws so that it engages only when the speeds of the clutch and the selected gear synchronize. The main change-speed gear is preferably controlled by a hand lever in the usual way. or both change-speed gears may be controlled hydraulically, pneumatically or electrically. A pneumatic control for the auxiliary change-speed gear is described, in which the clutch y is always biased to one gear position or the other and will not stay in the neutral position. The gear casing g, h may form part of a rigid axle casing.
