[Class 35] [Also in Group XXIV] In order to permit a V-belt o, or rope, to be slackened sufficient to allow it to be transferred from one V-groove to another in stepped driving and driven pulleys g, e on a precision grinding machine, a driving electric motor a, carrying the pulley g, is mounted on a slide c, and is supported against the belt pull in the position of maximum tension by a pawl m, which can be lifted out of engagement with a fixed rack n when it is desired to slacken the belt for a shift. As shown, the pawl m is formed on a handle j, pivoted to the motor and being employed to slide the motor after raising the pawl. In a modification, the pawl is separate from the handle, which is linked to the motor.
