Abstract

501,881. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. June 2, 1938, No. 16543. Convention date, June 4, 1937. [Class 39 (i)] In a high-pressure lamp, one or more electric conductors are arranged within the outer jacket so that they are all on one side of the discharge, and extend in a substantially straight line between a lead through one end.of the jacket and a lead through the lamp at the other end of the jacket, so that during operation a magnetic field is established which reduces bowing of the arc. In one form, strips a, b, c are supported through mica on the upper surface of the envelope and are connected between leads 8 and 5 so that the discharge current therethrough establishes the required field. Strip a may carry more current than b or c. The conductors may be supported independently of, or may be arranged within, the envelope.
