Abstract
500,212. Drawing wire. SIMONS, A., and SIMONS, L. Aug. 4. 1937, No. 21507. Convention date, Aug. 7, 1936. [Class 83 (iv)] Dies.-Wire or the like is passed before entering a drawing die through a series of at least two chambers each containing a body of material under pressure which surrounds and abuts the wire, said material being carried into the chambers by the wire and accumulating therein under pressure whereby it exerts a frictional retarding action on the wire, said action increasing in the successive chambers towards the die. A drawing-die D and members 11, 5, 5a, 5b are retained, together with intermediate soft steel washers 8, 8a, 8b, 8c by a clamping-member 4 screwed into the holder 1. The wire passes through the members 11, 5, 5a, 5b with slight clearance and carries forward lubricant under pressure into the chambers therein. The force exerted by the die is stated to be reduced by the frictional retarding action, numerical examples being given in the Specification. The lubricant may be liquid, solid, in paste form, or a viscous material. A solid powder contains soap, tallow, and lime. The bores 9, 13 may be cylindrical or tapered as described in Specitication 269,330, [Class 83 (iv)] Relief means for excess pressure may be provided. It is stated that in drawing iron-chromium alloys, subsequent polishing is unnecessary. Water, liquid, or gas as coolant is circulated about the die by passages 2, 3.
