[Class 20 (iii)] A sound - reducing window comprises a plurality of panels arranged in three or more parallel planes, a hinged panel or panels in one or both of the outer planes, and one or more horizontally slidable panels in at least one plane capable of adjustment to provide a gap or gaps staggered in relation to the opening or openings obtained when the hinged panel or panels is or are opened. In the diagrammatic sectional plan shown in Fig. 1 of a window with panels arranged in three planes,. the exterior plane is occupied by sliding panels 1, 2, with or without a hinged panel 11, the interior plane by fixed end panels 5,7, and an intermediate hinged panel 6, and the middle plane by two separate sliding panels 3, 4. Fig. 14 shows a construction with the panels arranged in four parallel planes, the outer planes being occupied by sliding panels 21 and .end hinged panels 22, 23, while the intermediate planes are each occupied by a single sliding panel 20. Numerous other combinations of hinged and sliding panels are described. In the construction shown in sectional plan in Fig. 17, the window is provided on the outside and inside with hinged metal casements 28, 29, and the intermediate sliding panels 32, 33 are composed of unframed glass and mounted on rollers slidable along guide rails 35 secured to the horizontal member of the window frame. Tubular strips 36 of rubber are mounted on the vertical members 37 of the frame and act as buffers to cushion the movements of the sliding panels. In order to reduce the transmission of sound by reflection, the fixed frame members on all four sides are inclined, as shown, and may also be lined with sound-absorbent material. The window sill may be formed with a groove provided with ducts leading to the exterior for the purpose of draining away any accumulated moisture.
