Abstract

499,117. Spray carburetters. CARTER CARBURETOR CORPORATION. May 17, 1938, No. 14663. Convention date, May 18, 1937. [Class 7 (iii)] When the pressure in the intake system exceeds that in a suction device, distinct from the intake system, heated gases are drawn by the suction device through a housing, containing a thermally-responsive element which controls a choke valve. The suction device is formed by a pump 20 having a spring-pressed diaphragm 21 actuated by a cam-operated lever 24 and is disposed between pipes 38, 37 through which the suction in the intake manifold 6 is transmitted to a piston 16 connected to a curved connecting rod 14 mounted on the spindle of a choke valve. The suction opens the choke valve against the action of a bi-metallic coil 12 in an insulated housing 8 and also draws air heated in a stove 18 on the exhaust manifold 7 through the housing 8 and past the piston 16 which is a loose fit in the cylinder 17. When the suction in the intake manifold exceeds that produced by the pump, valves 41, 42 in the pump are held open, but when the suction in the manifold falls, the valves 41, 42 are opened and closed alternately by the movements of the diaphragm which also actuates a windscreen wiper 36. The fuel pump may be operated by the same cam as the diaphragm.
