Abstract
498,561. Water-tube steam boilers. FOSTER WHEELER, Ltd. (Foster Wheeler Corporation.) Feb. 4, 1938, No. 3560. [Class 123 (ii)] A water-tube steam boiler comprises a steam generating section 16, two or more separate furnaces 14, 15, flanking it, and a superheater encountered by gases from both furnaces as they proceed to the boiler section, some superheater tubes 30 being in the path of gases from only one of the furnaces, and the remainder 28 being swept by all the gases. The boiler section includes upper and lower drums 17, 18 connected by tubes 19 grouped in longitudinally spaced pairs. The furnaces are lined by water walls 20, 21, the tubes being staggered at the entrance to a chamber 25 at the rear of the boiler section to form slag screens 26, 27. Superheater tubes 28 are L-shaped with vertical loop portions adjacent the inlet to the boiler section. The other superheater section comprises vertical tubes 30 extending between headers and parallel to slag screen 27. The gases descend at the front of the boiler section to a flue containing tubular air heaters 35 .. 37 which are connected at one end to a forced draught fan and at the other to a box communicating with boxes 43, 44 delivering air to burners 22. In a modification the two superheater sections each consist of L-shaped loops their vertical portions being longitudinally spaced, and the entrances to chamber 25 from the two furnaces are so arranged by means of extensions of the furnace walls that the gases from one furnace pass over both superheaters and those from the other over only one.
