Abstract
<PICT:0498215/III/1> Mineral insulating-oil for use in electrical apparatus is degasefied, treated with finely divided adsorbent to remove soluble impurities, and then charged with an inert gas. Oil is drawn from a tank 1, and passes through a filter 3, and heater 35 maintained at 70 to 200 DEG F., to a spray nozzle 5 mounted in an evacuated chamber 6. Water vapour and gases are drawn off by a pump 8. The treated oil is drawn off from the bottom of the chamber 6 and passes through a heater 36 maintained at 200 to 380 DEG F., to a tank 37 to which fuller's earth is admitted from a hopper 39. The mixture passes to a filter 41 from which the hot oil is fed into a second evacuated spray chamber 43. The clean degasefied oil then passes to a chamber 15 connected a supply of compressed carbon dioxide, nitrogen, or helium 18. The gas-charged oil then passes through a cooler 47 to a tank 20 where it is stored under a blanket of the inert gas. The oil may be used as insulator in the type of cable described in Specification 409,678, [Group XXXVI]. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also modifications wherein the treatment with an adsorbent is omitted. The oil after passing through the evacuated degasefying chamber is charged with gas either in a gasefying chamber, or through a gas injector mounted in the oil pipe. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
