Abstract
Coke-oven and like industrial gases are treated with adsorbents to remove a mixture comprising ethylene and other volatile constituents and also less volatile hydrocarbons such as propylene, propane, butylene, butane, &c. This mixture obtained by flushing the adsorbent is partly liquefied by pressure, or is wholly liquefied and then partly evaporated. The more volatile fraction consisting chiefly of ethylene may be again treated with an adsorbent to remove residual quantities of the less volatile hydrocarbons. An adsorbent which has already been charged in the original treatment of the coke-oven gas may be used for this purpose. The purified fraction rich in ethylene is suitable for conducting organic reactions, such as condensation with benzene to produce ethyl benzene. The less volatile hydrocarbons may be liquefied for use as fuel. p The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the separate removal of the ethylene and the less volatile hydrocarbons from industrial gases, the latter being removed by active carbon and the ethylene subsequently removed by solution in sulphuric acid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
