Abstract

<PICT:0371916/III/1> Carbon black and acetylene are manufactured by treating vaporized hydrocarbons in the electric arc, passing the mixture of gas and carbon black issuing from the arc in whirling motion into a large cooled space, the area of cross section of which is substantially greater than that of the arc space, and then separating the carbon black from the gas. The volume of the large space should be more than 100 times, preferably more than 500 times, larger than that of the arc space, and its area of cross section is usually more than 8, preferably more than 40, times larger. The ratio of the amount of gas (in cubic metres) passed per hour through the arc to the power of the arc (in kilowatts) should preferably lie below about 0,60. The separation of the carbon black from the gas may be effected mechanically, e.g. by passing the gas through sieves, or electrically, e.g. by filtration in known dust separators. The carbon black obtained is suitable for use as a filler in the rubber industry or as a black colouring agent. In an example, a gas mixture containing methane, hydrogen, nitrogen and traces of unsaturated hydrocarbons carbon monoxide and dioxide and oxygen is treated in the apparatus shown. The water-cooled arc furnace C is provided with an insulated electrode A and a counter-electrode G connected to earth. The gas is introduced tangentially at F and is thus set in whirling motion in the box M. Below the arc chamber is a large water-cooled cylindrical hollow chamber H in which the whirling motion is maintained owing to the impetus of the gas. Any carbon black settling on the walls is removed by a rotating scraper K. The gas leaving H passes to an electric dust-remover L where the carbon black is entirely removed from the gas.ALSO:<PICT:0371916/IV/1> Acetylene and carbon black are manufactured by treating vaporized hydrocarbons in the electric arc, passing the mixture of gas and carbon black issuing from the arc in whirling motion into a large cooled space, the area of cross section of which is substantially greater than that of the arc space, and then separating the carbon black from the gas. The ratio of the amount of gas (in cubic metres) passed per hour through the arc to the power of the arc (in kilowatts) should preferably lie p below about 0,60. The separation of the carbon black from the gas may be effected mechanically, e.g. by passing the gas through sieves, or electrically, e.g. by filtration in known dust-separators. The carbon black obtained is suitable for use as a filler in the rubber industry or as a black colouring agent. In an example, a gas mixture containing methane, hydrogen, nitrogen, and traces of unsaturated hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and dioxide and oxygen is treated in the apparatus illustrated in the Figure. The gas leaving H passes to an electric dust-remover L where the carbon black is entirely removed from the gas. A table is given comparing the properties of rubber vulcanized in the presence of wool grease, stearic acid, zinc oxide, a condensation product from aldol and b -naphthylamine, mercaptobenzothiazole and diphenylguanidine, with addition of (a) carbon black obtained by the above process, (b) carbon black obtained when cooling with a water-cooled coil, and (c) the carbon black known as Micronex.ALSO:Carbon black suitable for use as a ffller in the rubber industry is obtained, together with acetylene, by treating vaporized hydrocarbons in the electric arc, passing the mixture of gas and carbon black issuing from the arc in whirling motion into a large cooled space, the area of cross section of which is substantially larger than that of the arc space, and then separating the carbon black from the gas, either mechanically, e.g. by passing the gas through sieves, or electrically, e.g. by filtration in known dust separators. A table is given comparing the properties of rubber vulcanized in the presence of wool grease, stearic acid, zinc oxide, a condensation product from aldol and b -naphthylamine, mercaptobenzothiazole and diphenylguanidine, with addition of (a) carbon black-obtained as above, (b) carbon black obtained when cooling with a water-cooled coil, and (c) the carbon black known as Micronex.
