Abstract

<PICT:0384761/III/1> Coal tar is mixed with a solvent of a paraffin character and superheated steam is passed into the mixture, whereby pitch-like ingredients are separated therefrom, leaving a supernatant liquid which is used as a paint or for impregnating wood &c. Dehydrated coal tar is heated in a tank 1 provided with steam jackets 2, and superheated steam is passed in through pipes 5 to form impinging jets of steam which are mixed with paraffin admitted through a jet 3. The solvent vapours and steam pass through a pipe 11 to a condenser. After settling the supernatant liquid is drawn off through cocks 6, 7, and the pitch through a cock 8. The pitch residue may also be used in the preparation of an anticorrosive paint.
