Abstract

Hydrocarbons.-Liquid hydrocarbons are obtained by the action of atomic hydrogen upon hydrocarbons, dissociation of the hydrogen being started before the introduction of the hydrocarbon into the dissociation zone. In an example, hydrogen is passed through a series of sparks nr an electric arc, and impune naphthalene vapour is then led in after the dissociation has started. The treated gas is removed rapidly from the high temperature zone. The admission of napthalene may be interrupted periodically while the hydrogen alone circulates through the apparatus. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes the production of liquid hydrocarbons from atomic hydrogen and carbon, and includes a modification in which the carbon or hydrocarbon is introduced into the hydrogen as near as possible to the place where the dissociation of the hydrogen is effected. It is stated that catalysts may also be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted
