234,845. Schloesing, T. May 30, 1924, [Convention date]. Tobacco. - For removing nicotine. tobacco is subjected at about 1000 C. to the action of a current of a mixture of steam and gaseous ammonia, there being an appreciable substantially constant ammoniacal pressure which may be maintained by the introduction into the apparatus of further gas. After passing over tobacco in a vessel R, the mixture containing nicotine and some aromatic constituents of the tobacco is condensed in a chamber D and then passes to a container A where it is treated with a nicotine solvent such as kerosene. This solvent passes to a container B where it is freed from its nicotine by an acid, such as sulphuric acid: the nicotine-free mixture, on the other hand, passes to a vaporizing chamber C and then again to the vessel R.
