Abstract
497,157. Knitting - machines. BERRIDGE & CO., Ltd., I. L., and COLTON, L. H. June 18, 1937, Nos. 17038 and 19576. [Class 74 (ii)] In a straight-bar machine having welting mechanism located above the frame needles for producing a turn-over welt, the thread of the first welt course is prevented, by means independent of the welt hooks, from being engaged in the beards of spaced needles with which the welt hooks co-operate. As shown in Fig. 1, thread fed to all the needles is prevented from passing into the beards of selected needles by presser elements 27 on a bar 28 operated by a cam 32 on the worm cam shaft 16, the pressers being moved towards the needles by the engagement of a member 134, with faces 35 on the arms 36. Alternatively, depending presser elements may be carried by a bar above the needles or presser elements 37, Fig. 8, may be mounted for horizontal reciprocating movement in the presser bar 26<1>. According to a further modification alternate needles are projected to a greater height than the remaining needles for actuation by the customary presser. Alternatively the thread of the first welt course may be laid on the shanks of alternate needles only by mounting the needles on two bars which are pivotally connected as shown in Fig. 11 or otherwise relatively movable to permit of one bar being moved to or left in inoperative position. The weft loops extending between alternate needles, or cast off by means of the pressers, are received by the knocking over bits 25, when the needles are lowered, and transfixed by welt hooks 12 inserted at the back of the needles. Specification 476,045 is referred to.
