Abstract

Urea derivatives of the formula RR1NCH2 CH2NHCONH2, where R and R1 are alkyl groups or RR1N is the residue of a heterocyclic secondary base, are prepared from amines of the formula RR1NCH2CH2NH2 by treating the amines or their salts with cyanic acid or its salts or derivatives, preferably in aqueous solution, or with a substance capable of reacting as cyanic acid under the reaction conditions, e.g. fulminic acid, or with a reactive derivative of urea, e.g. nitrourea, or with carbamyl chloride. Examples are given in which (1) nitrourea and asym. dimethylethylenediamine yield b -dimethylaminoethylurea; (2) nitrourea and b -piperidylethylamine yield b -piperidylethylurea; (3) potassium cyanate and b -piperidylethylamine in aqueous hydrochloric acid solution yield b -piperidylethylurea; (4) nitrourea and asym. dibutylethylenediamine yield b -dibutylaminoethyl urea. Other amines which may be treated are N-(b -aminoethyl)-morpholine, N-(b -aminoethyl)tetrahydroquinoline, and asym. diethylethylenediamine. Asym. dibutylethylenediamine may be prepared by reacting dibutylamine, formaldehyde, sodium bisulphite and sodium cyanide in an aqueous medium, and reducing the dibutylaminoacetonitrile so obtained with sodium and alcohol.
