Abstract

Inorganic acid salts of 2:4-diamino-1:3:5-triazines of the formula: <FORM:0867226/IV (b)/1> wherein R1, R2 R3 and R4 are the sam or different and are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, substituted aryl (e.g. chlorphenyl) or a heterocyclic radical, provided that not more than three of the substituents R1 to R4 are hydrogen, are prepared by heating an inorganic acid salt of a diguanide of the formula: R1R2N-C(NH)-NH-C(NH)-NR3R4 with concentrated formic acid, followed by treatment of the reaction products with water. Any tendency for the triazine salts to hydrolyse to the free base may be prevented by adding to the treatment water a small amount of acid corresponding to the salt required. The process is applicable to the preparation of both salts of volatile inorganic acids (e.g. hydrochloric or sulphur acids) and salts of non-volatile inorganic acids.
