Abstract
The invention comprises new acylamino compounds of formula <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/1> in which R1 and R2 are aryl residues, R3 i a <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/2> group or a <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/3> group and the -OH and -NH- groups are attached to adjacent carbon atoms in the aryl nuclei. They may be prepared by condensing tartaric or malic acid with primary aryl amines containing an hydroxyl group in adjacent position to the amino group. In addition to the hydroxyl group the aryl amine may be substituted with an alkyl or alkoxy group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, a halogen atom or a nitro group. The condensation is advantageously carried out in the presence of an inert organic solvent. In the examples the following compounds are prepared: <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/4> <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/5> <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/6> <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/7> <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/8> <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/9> and <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/100> In accordance with the process described in Specification 835,894 p the products may be used for the production of optical brightening agents by treating with agents that split off water. For example, compound (a) yields a compound of formula <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/111> (b) yields <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/122> (c) yields <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/133> (d) yields <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/144> (e) yields <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/155> (f) yields <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/166> and (g) yields <FORM:0835893/IV (b)/177>
