495,972. Piston-packing substitutes. BRENDLIN, A. May 28, 1937, No. 14855. Convention date, May 28, 1936. [Class 122 (i)] [Also in Group XXVIII] Relates to diaphragm and bellows packing as described in Specification 488,579, which describes bellows packing built up of corrugated diaphragms, each diaphragm being supported by an annular plate built up of sectors held by inner and outer rings. In the arrangement referred to the crests of the corrugations of the diaphragms a were supported by rings b interposed between the diaphragm and the surface BA of the supporting ring, and, according to the invention, a clearance e is provided between the rings b and the surface BA, in the unloaded condition of the diaphragm. In the loaded position BC the rings b are pressed into contact with the surface of the supporting plate, as shown. The rings b may be divided on planes parallel to the surface BA.
