Abstract
495,891. Squirting. BEAVER, C. J., FAIRFIELD, T. J., and GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T. June 23, 1937, No. 17478. [Class 83 (iv)] In apparatus for extruding plastic metal from two or more containers in which plungers operate successively at time intervals to produce a continuous output, a valveless passage leads from each container to a common extrusion chamber and back flow of metal is prevented by arranging the junctions between any two passages or between a passage and the chamber so that there is an angle of 90‹ or less between any two meeting streams of metal. The invention is shown applied to an apparatus for extruding a metal sheath 1 around a cable 2. The metal is forced into the extrusion chamber 21 alternately from containers 3 and 4 by means of rams 8, each of the containers communicating with the chamber 21 by two passages 17, 18 and 19, 20 respectively. In order to prevent back flow of metal into one container during the back stroke of the ram in that container and during the pressure stroke of the ram in the other container, the passages 17 and 19 and the passages 18 and 20 meet at an angle of 60‹. In a modified form the metal streams 32, 34 from the two containers pass directly into the extrusion chamber in a tangential direction. Specification 479,971 is referred to.
