Abstract

495,369. Propelling aircraft. VOKES, C. G. May 7, 1937, No. 20795. Divided out of 495,320. [Class 4] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXVIII] Air entering a scoop 4 having an opening 5 facing the direction of movement of an aircraft is delivered through a filter element 6 in the fuselage to a pipe 7 leading to the carburetter air intake or to an enclosed space in which the engine is housed. Rain &c. entering the scoop and any matter dislodged from the filter element, which is preferably pleated, are discharged through an opening 8 situated below the filter. In Figs. 3 and 4, the filters 22 are arranged in zigzag formation in the cowling ring of a radial-cylinder engine. Air entering through forwardly directed openings 30 passes from spaces 28 through the filters 22 into spaces 29 and thence into a chamber 21 having an outlet 23 leading to the air intake. Rain &c. striking inclined V- shaped members 26, which separate adjacent filter elements, is led into an annular chamber 32 and discharged through an outlet 33. Specifications 367,009, [Group XXVIII], and 401,291 are referred to.
