Abstract

1336453 I.C. engine exhaust silencers and filters FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 19 April 1971 [3 March 1970] 22683/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division B1] Partitions 20 .... 28 dividing the interior of a housing 10 into chambers 30 .... 40 between an exhaust gas inlet 15 and an outlet 17 have orifices 42 .... 50 which are progressively smaller from the inlet to the outlet. Baffles 52 .... 62 in the chambers deflect the exhaust stream and particles unable to follow the deflection are separated from the stream and drop through apertures 68 in the floor 64 to storage spaces 66. The apertures 68 can decrease in size from the inlet 15 to the outlet 17 and a lip 70 may be provided at each aperture to inhibit particle return to the exhaust stream.
