Abstract

755,269. Centrifugal separators. ROLLS-ROYCE, Ltd. April 1, 1955 [April 1, 1954], No. 9650/54. Class 23. [Also in Group I] In a fuel system of an internal combustion engine, a centrifugal separator, having a stack of conical members, discharges impurities with a minor part of the fuel to a filter, the fuel separated in the filter being returned to the system. Fuel from a pipe 10 passes into the separating chamber through the inlet tube 15 and inlets 15c. The impurities with a minor part of the fuel are discharged from the chamber through outlets 30 into the part 31 of a stationary casing located between seals 32, 33. The impurities and fuel passes from the part 31 through a non-return valve 35 to a filter 36 comprising a casing 37 and a filter element 38. The impurities are deposited within the filter, and the fuel is returned to the pipe 10 after passing through a restrictor 40. Cleaned fuel from the separating chamber passes through perforations 24a in a tube 24 and an outlet 26 to the separator casing from whence it is discharged through an outlet 28. A wire mesh filter 41, within the tube 24 prevents ice particles being discharged with the fuel, and in a modification this filter is electrically heated. The separator is supported in bearings 14, 19 engaging the tube 15, and is driven by a hydraulic motor 16 supplied from a high pressure part of the system and exhausted into a low pressure part of the system.
