Abstract

495,177. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd. (Smith, E. W.) July 22, 1938, No. 21778. [Class 53] An accumulator cover having filling and vent openings has a tube extending downward from the filling opening to the desired level of the electrolyte and a member mounted on the cover and movable at will to seal either the filling or vent opening. The cell cover has a vent opening 4 and a filling opening 3, the latter being surrounded by a tube 2 extending down to the desired level 20 of the electrolyte. On a raised runway 6 is a slidable member 5 which can be moved to cover either the filling or vent opening. The sliding member is formed with flanges and a convex under-surface to co-operate with the runway and provide effective sealing, Fig. 2 (not shown). Under the vent opening there is, preferably, provided a space 53 enclosed by a perforated baffle 16 in order to prevent acid spray from passing through it. In place of the sliding member there may be used a pivoted member, Fig. 4 (not shown), held in frictional contact with the lid by means of its mounting or by a further movable portion mounted below the lid on a common pivot passing through the lid, Fig. 7 (not shown). In a further construction a rotatable disc is used, covering both filling and vent openings and held in position by a split ring in an annular surrounding boss, Fig. 9 (not shown). In all cases the movable member is capable of being put in an intermediate position in which both openings are uncovered.
