414,582. Batteries. BEAUMONT, E. P., 1272, East 31st Street, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A. Jan. 18, 1934, No. 1825. Convention date, Jan. 18, 1933. [Class 53.] A dry cell is provided with a filling opening which is normally closed by a conducting plug 20 which makes contact with the carbon electrode 12 and forms one terminal of the cell. The plug 20 may consist of a metal cap in which is fitted a member 19 made of carbon. The plug screws into a nipple formed on an insulating washer 16 which rests on lugs 15 projecting from a washer 14. Plastic composition 18 fills the space above the washer 16, indentations 26 being formed in the zinc container 10 to prevent loosening of the material 18 after it has solidified. The cell may be provided with a valve serving as a gas exit and consisting of a small hole 27 in the bottom of the container 10 above which is a disc 28 small enough to slide freely but large enough always to cover the hole 27. The disc 28 is situated below a paper disc 11 which insulates the carbon electrode from the zinc container. To activate the cell electrolyte is introduced from a collapsable tube 22 which screws into the filling opening as shown in Fig. 2. A groove 24 cut across the threads of the nozzle of the tube allows air to escape from the cell. The plug 20 may be provided with a gasket which seats on a flange projecting inwardly from the washer 16 to make a tight joint.
