Abstract
495,141. Road-surface marking-studs. TALLENTS, R. A. Sept. 29, 1937, Nos. 26319 /37 and 19839 /38. [Class 3 (ii)] A road-marking stud comprises an apertured metal head and a shank extending through the aperture and formed with a socket at its upper end containing light-reflecting means. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3, the stud comprises a pyramidal head 10, preferably of stainless steel, and a shank 12 of cruciform cross-section extending through an aperture in the head and formed with a socket 15 in which a reflecting lens 17 is secured by cement 18. A groove 19 is formed in the head to expose the lens. The shank is preferably welded to the head. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, in which the shank 12 is of rectangular cross-section and a lens 17 is secured at opposite ends of the socket, members 22 are hingedly secured by hooked ends 23 in slots 21 in a collar 20 secured to the head, the opposing faces of these members converging towards their lower ends. When the shank is driven through the aperture in the head, these members are urged apart and deform a soft metal cylinder 25 embedded in the road. Instead of using the cylinder 25, the outer sides of the members 22 may be serrated or provided with claws to bite into the road material. The shank may be withdrawn by engaging a pick, tommy bar or the like in a recess 24.
