Description

-C. A. LOVE AND C. GOLDSTON. STAPLE NAIL.
APPLICATION m) APR. 2|. 1920;
1 7 03 I Patented May '17, 1921..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- STAPLE-NAIL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 17, 1921.
Application filed April 21, 1920. Serial No. 375,504.
1 '0 all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. LOVE and CHARLES GoLDs'roN, citizens of the United States, residing at Paris, in the State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staple-Nails;- and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a staple-nail to be used as an ordinary nail or staple for holding wire, etc., and which can be readily drawn with a claw hammer or other implement, and the invention has for its object to provide a staple-nail which will hold in the wood better than nails now in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction of the staple-nail and particularly in the relation of the prong with respect to the body of the nail, the prong being so constructed that during its entry into wood, it
imparts a twisting movement to the shankportion of the staple-nail, thus increasing the frictional engagement of the. nail with the wood and thereby enhancing its holding power.
Referring to the accompanying drawing;
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a staple nail constructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the two figures, in which:
1 indicates the staple-nail, including the shank 2, head portion 8 and prong 4, which prong depends from the head portion 3 in a direction substantially parallel with the shank 2, a space 5 bein thus provided between the shank 2 andt e prong l, permitting the device to straddle a strand or strands of wire or the like.
The shank 2 is preferably substantially rectangular in cross section and the prong 4 is provided with one beveled side 6; its opposite side 7 being substantially in line with the shank 2.
In operation, the shank 2, being longer than the prong 4, first enters the wood a considerable distance before the tapered shank engages the wood. Subsequent progress of the staple-nail into the wood causes both shank and prong to pass into or through the wood coincidently. The one beveled side 6 of the prong 4 which meets the wood angularly, causes the prong to sheer or follow a direction laterally to the vertical axis of the shank 2; thus imparting to the shank a twisting motion on its vertical 7 axis in the wood and greatly increasing the frictional engagement between the shank 2 and the wood and enhancing the holding power of the device. 7
hat we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
A staple-nail including a shank and head portion and a prong depending from the head-portion and shorter than the shank, one lateral side of the prong being beveled, the
plane of the bevel crossing the vertical axis of the shank, the other side of the prong being substantially parallel to the corre sponding side of the shank, the one beveled side presenting to the wood an inclined plane to deflect the said prong laterally with respect to the vertical axis of the shank on its, vertical axis to impart a twisting movement to the shank within the wood.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
C. A. LOVE. CHARLES GOLDSTON. Witnesses:
C. B. ADEN, W. O. RAINEY.
