Abstract
494,941. Extrusion presses. WOLVERINE TUBE CO. March 2, 1937, No. 6216. Convention date, March 23, 1936. [Class 83 (iv)] An extrusion press has a movable tool for forcing the stock, through a die means for removing excess metal from the end, means for moving a shearing punch supported for swinging into the path of the movable tool when retracted, and a spacer for actuating the punch. As shown, a heated billet A is compressed in a lined container 27, Figs. 1 and 2, and is then pierced and extruded by a tool 22, 24, 26. The residue in the form of a flange C, Fig. 5, is severed by a tool E carried on an arm 34, which is pivoted on a shaft 35 at the free end of a bracket 36. The bracket 36 is pivoted on a shaft 37 moved axially by a piston 38. The arm 36 and tool E swings inwardly and slides to contact the flange C. A spacer F carried by an arm 41 on the shaft 35 is then swung in, and is engaged by the extrusion plunger 24 to sever the residue. Slots in the holder 33 and spacer F, respectively, accommodate the piercing pin 26. After swinging the spacer sideways, the punch E is raised and carries with it the residue C. A cooling device G forming the subject-matter of Specification 494,942, for the extrusion punch and piercing tool is connected to a boss of the arm 34 by another arm socket when the arm 36, is moved against a stop F the cooling device is brought beneath the punch.
