Abstract
755,828. Shaping metal-foil caps. EVANS, D., and EVANS (DAIRY ENGINEERS), Ltd., D. Sept. 30, 1953 [June 30, 1952], No. 16461/52. Class 100 (2). A machine for producing flanged metal foil caps, e.g. for milk bottles, comprises a reciprocating annular punch 22 and a co-operating die ring 21, into which the punch slides for punching out a cap blank from the metal foil strip 11, and a forming member 29, located within the die ring 21, over which the punch moves to produce a flange around the cap rim. The strip 11 is advanced through a guide slot 12 in a member 13 attached by bolts 17 to a block 15 formed with a bore 14 for guiding the punch body 18. The punch 22 is formed on the inner end of the body 18 and a movable embossing element 24 is slidably mounted in a bore in the body 18. A control rod 25 connected to the element 24 carries a spring 27 adapted to urge the element 24 to the rearward position. The die ring 21 is held in a bore 19 in the member 13 by a removable plate 30. The flanging member 29 is carried on a spigot 33 passing through a coaxial bore in the plate 30. An ejecting ring 28 slidable over the forming member is connected through pins 31 with a movable plate 32 slidable over the spigot 33 and urged inwardly by a spring 34 bearing at its outer end against an adjustable nut 35. After the formation of the flanged cap, further inward movement of the punch body causes the embossing element 24 to be forced against the face of the cap which is backed up for the embossing operation by a resilient pad 37. On retraction of the punch the formed cap is carried therein away from the die, through an opening 45 in a separating wall 46 into a discharge channel 48. Towards the rearmost end of the travel of the. punch the rod 25 engages an abutment 47 and causes the embossing element to move forwardly and eject the cap from the punch as shown in Fig. 1. A swinging lever 50 is adapted to ride over the punch 22 as it is withdrawn and to tap against the cap to prevent it sticking to the element 24. Specification 736,504 is referred to.
