Abstract
493,214. Friction clutches. PLATT BROS. & CO., Ltd.. and DAWSON, H. April 30, 1937. Nos. 12400/37 and 12972/38. [Class 80 (ii)] Engaging movement of the pressure plate 12a of a plate clutch is effected by a manuallyslidable sleeve 17 through the intermediary of bell - crank levers 19 pivotally mounted on a member 16 secured on an extension of the member 10 carrying the inner clutch plates, one arm of each lever carrying a roller 22 maintained in engagement with an internal conical surface 17c of the sleeve 1 by a torsion spring 24, while the other arm carries a roller 21 co-operating with the plate 12a. In the fully-engaged position, the rollers 22 engage a cylindrical surface 17d in the sleeve 17, whereby engagement is maintained. Each lever 19 comprises a pair of spaced plates, between which the rollers are mounted. The rollers 21 may act directly on the plate 12a. In the double clutch shown in Fig. 4, however, members 25 and 26 are interposed between the rollers 21 and the plate 12a, the member 26 being adjustably screwed on the member 25, which latter is splined on the member 10. As shown in Fig. 5, the member 16 is adjustably screwed on the member 10 and is locked in adjusted position by a, spring-loaded plunger 33 engageable with any one of a series of holes in a member 30, which latter is splined on the member 10 between the rollers 21 and the plate 12a. The member 30 is urged away from the plate 12a by springs 31, the extension of which is limited by means of headed screws 32 or by a flanged member secured to the plate 12a.
