492,843. Discharge lamps. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. Aug. 31, 1937, No. 23822. Convention date, Sept. 3, 1936. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group XX] A gas- or vapour-filled electric discharge tube is surrounded by a closed bulb free from water and containing a luminescent sulphide layer which has been freed from water - soluble halides, as by repeated extraction with distilled water. As shown, in a tube known per se, consisting of a quartz container 1 having electrodes connected to wires 4, 5 which support it in an outer glass envelope 2, this envelope is coated internally with a layer of zinc sulphide purified as described. The container has a filling of rare gas, and also contains mercury at a pressure exceeding 5 atmospheres. The envelope 2 may be filled with an inert gas such as nitrogen after removing air and all traces of water.
