Abstract
Materials such as coal and ore are separated by causing them to move longitudinally of a launder by a substantially horizontally flowing stream of liquid into a plurality of wedge shaped pockets, compacting the settling materials therein by adjustment of the apical angles of the pockets and further compacting the materials by adjusting the apical outlets from the pockets. The flowing materials may be subjected to upward currents of liquid of varying velocities. The process may be effected by use of the apparatus forming the subject-matter of Specification 491,839.
