Abstract

264,128. Martyn, T. G. Jan. 7, 1926, [Convention date]. Upward-current classifiers.-Mineral and other pulp is stratified in suspension by injecting water into the pulp from below, so that the lighter materials are in the upper strata. The strata thus formed are withdrawn in succession from the lightest to the heaviest. Fig. II shows a device into which sand is delivered from a sleeveseparating device 2, such as described in Specification 264,129, to an elongated V-section stratifying-box 5, Fig. III, the cross-section of which gradually decreases in area, into which water is delivered upwards by perforated pipes 7, a supply chamber 9, and orifices 10, which are arranged between baffles 11 in pairs inclining forwardly and inwardly so that their jets impinge on one another and flatten out, and carry the heavier constituents forwards towards the end 6 of the box, where the jets 10 are not inclined. The flow through these orifices may be controlled by long plates 12 on the arms of U- shaped yokes 14 adjusted by hand-wheels 17, The yokes 14 act also as springs to press the plates up to the orifices 10, 10, and springs 20 are fitted for the same purpose. The water roughly classifies the pulp, the lighter particles rising to the higher and wider part of the V-section chamber 5, whence they are withdrawn by a series of sorting-tubes 21-21<l>, the lighter particles being separated by the earlier tubes 21 &c., and the heaviest grades by the tubes 21<k-1>, of which the cross-section is smallest, and consequently the upward current is fastest. The tubes 21<a-1> are preferably contracted at the top, and lead to outlets 22, which are fitted at both sides of the cover 23; duplicate outlets not required may have plugs 24. In machines of larger capacity, each grading-tube 21 &c. is duplicated or multiplied.
