Upward-current classifiers.-In an upward current classifier the discharge of solids which have collected in the .classification compartment is controlled automatically, according to the quantity of solid collected, by a valve operated by fluctuations in the height of a column of liquid balanced against the solid in the compartment. In the apparatus shown, a series of compartments 10 is provided, each comprising a perforated bottom 18 and a lower chamber 20 to which water is ac'mitted by branch pipes from a header 23. Each branch pipe includes a rubber section 24 controlled by a pinch-cock 25 and the compartments are of such crosssection as to give a uniform upward flow of water, and the compartments and the inflow of water are so proportioned as to provide for progressively increasing fineness in the solids deposited. Each compartment has a solids discharge pipe 26 controlled by a valve 33 connected by a rod 34 to a diaphragm 31 closing a chamber 30 communicating by a pipe 29 with the compartment 10. As solids accumulate in the compartment, water rises in the tube 29 and causes the diaphragm to open the valve. Initial setting of the valve is varied by holes 35 and a pin 36. The material to be classified is fed to a trough 14 above the compartments 10 over a baffle 17. Inspection windows 37 are provided. The apparatus terminates, at the discharge end, in a final settling cone 39 similar to the compartments 10. The chambers 20 can be drained by plugs 38. By the arrangements described, including regulation of the inflow of water, solids are discharged at the same rate at which they accumulate, so that the working of the apparatus is continuous.
