Abstract

Separating by gravity.-The apparatus comprises a horizontally elongated vessel through which the lighter liquid flows straight in a horizontal direction while the heavier liquid falls to the bottom and collects in a well provided with a discharge-valve automatically controlled by rising and falling of the heavier liquid in the well. Fig. 1 shows a tank with inlet 3 baffles 2, heating coils 10, 11, lighter liquid outlet 4 and well 6 with automatic valve 7 for collecting and discharging the heavy liquid. Apparatus with two separating chambers 12, 13 is shown in Fig. 4. The mixture enters the chamber 12 at inlet 15, lighter liquid passing away through outlet 16 while the heavier enters the conpartment 13 through passage 17. Further separation takes place, the lighter part leaving by outlet 19, while the heavier collects in the well and is discharged through a valve operated by a float 8. The float instead of being directly connected to the valve may operate it by mechanical and electrical means, such as those, described' in Specification 218,462.
