Abstract

511,856. Gravity-separation apparatus. THOMSON, H. A. Feb. 24, 1938, No. 5888. Addition to 419,712. [Class 46] In apparatus for separating liquids of differet specific gravities, as described in the parent Specification and comprisng a number of quiescence chambers of ovate vertical crosssection and a dome or chamber in which one of separated liquids collects for discharge through a valve controlled by a lever turned by a float, a pilot float is provided to ensure that the main float shall always follow the separation level between the separated liquid and the flow liquid despite changes in the specific gravity of the latter. The apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 as applied in the separation of light oil from water. The float 12, which controls the outlet valve 8 for oil, is attached to a lever 10 turning on a fulcrum 11 and is counter-balanced by a pilot float 13 attached to the other end of the lever. The float 13 is weighted so that it overcomes the float 12 when both are immersed in the same liquid. When the float 12 is immersed in an upper layer of oil the lever is turned to open the valve 8 and the oil is discharged. Fig. 5 shows modified apparatus in which the floats are attached to separate levers 10<1>, 10", connected by a link 14. In this form of apparatus the collecting chamber 2 is recessed into the body 1 of the separator. Fig. 6 shows a further modification in which the float 13 and part of the lever 10 are in the body of the separator. When the apparatus is adapted for the collection of a liquid heavier than the main body of the mixture, the pilot float is made lighter than the main float.
