Abstract

824,244. Separating liquids by gravitation only. SILLEY, H. A. J., UNTHANK, D. G., and BRISTOW, L. Nov. 14, 1955 [Nov. 30, 1954], No. 34707 /54. Class 46. [Also in Group XXXV] Apparatus for separating liquids of different specific gravities comprises a closed container 10, 11 having an inlet 26 for the liquids to be separated, two outlets 18, 30 each for a different separated liquid constituent of the liquids, means, such as coaxial tubes 15, 16, 17 within the container connecting the inlet with the outlets and providing a passage through which the liquids flow with change of direction to separate into two constituent liquids, a valve 31 in one outlet 18 biased as by a spring 32, to oppose outflow of the constituent liquid, and a second valve 33 in the other outlet 30 and actuated by a double-acting liquid-operated motor 34, 35 supplied with liquid under pressure from the interior of the container. In its passage through the container, the liquid passes perforated baffles 24, 23 which split it into small streams to assist separation. Liquid is pumped into the container to maintain a pressure determined by the spring 32 of the outlet valve 33. The heavier liquid, e.g. water rises up the pipe 15 and is discharged past the valve 31 in the outlet 18, the pressure holding closed the valve 33 in the outlet 30 for the lighter liquid e.g. oil until movement of a pilot valve 38 opens a passage 40 and the upper part of the cylinder 35 to the container pressure whereupon the piston 34 moves downwards opening the valve 33 and compressing a spring 37 normal engaging the valve without pressure. As the valve opens the spring develops increasing pressure against it until the reduction of pressure through the escape of the oil allows the spring to close it again. Electrical contacts 46, 47, excited according to the position of the interface of the oil and water, actuate a solenoid 52 which adjusts the position of the valve 38. A further contact 48 may actuate an alarm
