Abstract
491,670. Knitting-machines. CLARKE, A. V. April 19, 1937, No. 11121. [Class 74 (ii)] A rotary needle-cylinder machine having means for driving it by power, has a handle whereby it can be turned by hand, and a trap door for withdrawing the knitting instruments in the cylinder, so located that an operator turning, the handle cam readily see both the trap door and the knitting point. The invention is described in connection with a superposed needle-cylinder machine, and the handle 132 is arranged at the front of the machine. The handle is mounted upon a shaft 133 extending from the front to the rear of the machine and connected by bevel gearing 134 to a transverse lay shaft 80 geared in turn to the usual quadrant gear 81. A free-wheel device 136 is arranged on the shaft 80 so that the quadrant gear 81 receives motion from the handle 132 but cannot transmit motion to the shaft 80. A trap door is provided in the cam case of each of the two needle cylinders, and in a machine having two feeds and knitting points, the handle is so arranged that both knitting points and the trap door are visible to the operator at the handle.
