Abstract
Textile materials such as threads and yarns, woven knitted or netted fabrics of cotton, jute, flax, wool, silk or rayon, paper, paper boards, plaster, plaster boards, fibres or fibre boards, wood and stone are rot-proofed by treatment with an aqueous emulsion in which the nonaqueous phase is a concentrated solution of a water-insoluble toxic metallic salt or ester of a tar or petroleum acid, e.g. zinc or aluminium naphthenate. A concentrated solution is defined as one in which the solute is the predominant constituent. Suitable solvents are white spirit, naphtha, kerosene, petrol or creosote. The emulsion may be added to sizes or adhesives such as animal glue, casein cement or a synthetic resin, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde resin, while in the liquid state. For example one half to one per cent of zinc naphthenate emulsion may be added to a casein cement emulsion. The treatment may be combined with waterproofing, fireproofing, dyeing or sizing processes in any order of procedure or the rot-proofing emulsion may be added to a dispersion of the finishing agent in a miscible liquid. The rot-proofing emulsion may be applied to materials treated with tannic acid preparations as cutch or directly added to such preparations. The example describes mixing white spirit or coal tar naphtha with zinc naphthenate, adding the solution slowly while stirring to a melted emulsifying agent such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark "Emulphor O" and stirring into water to form a thick cream which is diluted for use. Specification 471,415, [Group VIII], is referred to.ALSO:A rot-proofing aqueous emulsion in which the non-aqueous phase is a concentrated solution of a water-insoluble toxic metallic salt or ester of a tar or petroleum acid, e.g. zinc or aluminium naphthanate is added to a synthetic resin, e.g. phenol-formaldehyde resin, while in the liquid state.
