Abstract

A welding-flux which is preferably used either as a core or a coating for an electrode consists of magnesium silicate and silica in the relative proportions of 1 to 1\2 -2 by weight, with or without titanium dioxide. When used as a coating on an electrode it is applied by means of water and a binder such as sodium silicate, a suitable mixture being silica 14,4 per cent, magnesium silicate 8,2 per cent, sodium silicate 18,4 per cent, and water 60 per cent. This flux may be associated with an electrode of manganese steel containing, for example, 12-15,per cent of manganese, 0,6-1,3 per cent of carbon, 2,75-5,0 per cent of nickel, 0,5-1,75 per cent of silicon, and up to 0,1 per cent each of phosphorus and sulphur, the balance being iron, and used for welding austenitic manganese steel with either direct or alternating current. The presence of nickel in the welding electrode is stated to give an air toughening deposit and the hardness of the deposit may be increased by peening.
