[Class 110 (i)] [Also in Groups XII and XIII] In an air washer comprising a casing 20 with an air inlet 37 and a volute outlet passage 26 with a fan 25 at the centre and a pumping unit 27 dipping into a water tank 21 for projecting a heavy spray in the path of incoming air and a light spray into the fan, the pumping unit comprises a hub member 66 and spray cones 28, 29, radial vanes 67, 76 on the hub and cone 28 spacing the elements from one another. A spray guide 69 rests on vanes at the top of cone 29. The lower end of pump 28 extends below that of pump 29 within a well 58 into which water flows through a valve 59 operable by a push rod 60 depressed, e.g. by a cam 65 rotated by a thermostatically controlled motor 64. If the valve is only slightly open all the water travels up pump 28, the heavy spray which serves to cool the air being cut off. A fine mesh screen 92 encircles the edge of the pump and another screen unit surrounding it, of a coarse outer and fine inner mesh, has the lower edge of the fine mesh screen tapered so as to equalize the volume of air moving inwardly from all directions.
