Abstract

686,102. Centrifugal separators. SELFPRIMING PUMP & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Oct. 26, 1950 [Sept. 9, 1949], No. 23437/49. Class 23 [Also in Group XXVI] A pump for highly volatile liquids or liquids containing occluded gas, as shown a submersible pump for the fuel tank of an aircraft, comprises a centrifugal impeller 17 rotatable in a horizontal plane, and a centrifugal separator for separating gas from the liquid about to enter the impeller, the separator being in the form of a chamber beneath the impeller and having a central inlet aperture 18 in the bottom, an outlet 7 for gas at the top and provided with internal blades 15, the blades and at least part of the chamber being rotatable. The impeller has an inlet eye 4 in the form of a downwardly directed annulus closed at the top, the inner wall of the annulus surrounding the gas outlet' and the outer wall 13 forming a continuation of the chamber, whereby the separated gas passes upwardly through the outlet within the eye. The chamber is bounded by a sleeve 12, to the interior of which the blades 15 are attached. Each of the latter tapers from a minimum width at the bottom to a maximum width at the entrance to the eye, and abuts and merges at 16 with an impeller blade. The aperture 18 is sharp edged and is formed in a fixed plate 14. The gas is discharged into a funnel 9. The gas outlet is constituted by the openings between three arms which connect the inner wall of the annlus to a driving shaft 10 coupled to an electric motor 2. The arms may be shaped to serve as an extractor fan. It is stated that the shaft may be hollow to serve as a chimney for assisting extraction of the gas, and may be provided internally with an extractor fan.
