[Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] A rectifier 5 is supplied through a transformer 1 connected to the supply through a choking coil 2 premagnetized by rectified current, the transformer 1 having its magnetic circuit formed with an air gap. The choking coil 2 may comprise two separate cores each having an A.C. and a D.C. winding the A.C. windings or the D.C. windings being connected in opposition. Alternatively a three limbed choking coil, having the A.C. winding arranged on its outer limbs and the D.C. winding arranged on its centre limb, may be provided. A second premagnetizing winding may be provided on the choking coil. The arrangement may charge a battery 6 at approximately constant voltage or may be used to give a " tip-over " charge to the battery.
